Nursing school is tough. I felt it was quite a pressure cooker. Most of the time, I felt the teachers were purposefully making it challenging. What about you? Being a nurse is even harder. It isn’t about the pressure to remember what you are learning. It is about being able to handle the stress of being a nurse. The pressure of making sure everyone and everything else is ok before you are.
So what can you do to make Nursing School a little less pressure on you, PLUS acing it at the same time?
Check out our Top 3 Nursing School Hacks below.
1. Take the time to get to know what type of learner you are
So much precious study time is wasted when, as students, we muddle through, making notes we think we need to make and reading all the textbooks. However, when you spend the time to find out what type of learner you are, BEFORE you begin your studies, you will find you will learn more and get more done in a shorter period of time.
Maybe you learn better with lots of diagrams or pictures? Maybe listening to audiobooks or lectures while taking your own notes is your style? Take an online quiz to determine your learning style and watch how more you get done and remember.
2. Surround yourself with people who know what you are going through
We have all been there. When we study we are under pressure. And when we feel like that, it is helpful to talk to someone about it. But if that is not the right person to speak to, then you may find the situation becomes more stressful.
Surround yourself with people who know exactly what you are going through. Current students; Those who have been through Nursing School; Nursing Mentors. They all know the pressure you are facing while learning this important job, so they will truly understand if you are stressed or feeling the pressure.
We also recommend making sure you are part of a study group. The more like-minded people you are surrounded with, the more support you will feel, and the easier Nursing School will seem. Lately, getting together in person has not been an option, but that doesn’t mean you cannot host study groups via Facetime or Zoom. You can also join Social Media groups and pages that are followed by nursing students from all over the country.
3. Plan your study time well and stick to your plan
It is human nature that we want things to be easy, as this causes less stress. But did you know that this is the worst thing you can do when you study? While we feel getting as much of the easy stuff done first, means we are more productive, it actually makes us procrastinate longer on stuff we find more difficult, therefore we find we put ourselves under pressure if we have to cram for an exam or paper.
When you sit down to study, make a plan and stick to it. Prioritize what NEEDS to be done, not what is easy to tick off the list. And push yourself to put the hardest, most difficult tasks first on your list and do them then. Not only will you feel like you have accomplished more, but you will feel lighter and less stressed as the hard part is out of the way.
